Why can't diesel generator sets run without load for a long time? The reason is here!

As a reliable backup power source, diesel generator sets play an important role in industrial production and emergency power supply. However, many people may not be aware that diesel generators are not suitable for long-term no-load operation.

There are three main reasons: firstly, the combustion efficiency decreases. When running without load, the diesel engine has low load and the combustion chamber temperature drops, resulting in insufficient fuel combustion, carbon deposition, increased wear, and reduced engine life.

Secondly, poor lubrication. Under normal load, lubrication between internal parts of the engine is more effective. When unloaded, insufficient formation of lubricating oil film may lead to dry friction and accelerate mechanical wear.

Finally, the electrical performance is unstable. Generators require a certain load to stabilize voltage and frequency. No-load operation may cause high voltage, damage electrical equipment, and easily cause excitation inrush current, affecting generator performance.

Therefore, arranging the load reasonably and avoiding long-term no-load is the key to maintaining the healthy operation of diesel generator sets. Regularly conduct load testing to ensure it is always in optimal condition for unexpected needs.
