Seven taboos before starting a diesel generator! The last point is often overlooked by many teachers

Date:2025-08-22

The correct starting method is the key to ensuring the safe operation and extending the service life of diesel generator sets.

Proper starting operation is crucial when using diesel generator sets in daily life. Improper startup methods may not only damage equipment, but also shorten its service life and even cause safety accidents. Here are seven operational misconceptions that must be avoided before starting a diesel generator:

1. Avoid starting without water or sudden addition of boiling water: Failure to add cooling water before starting, or sudden addition of boiling water at around 100 ℃ to a cold body, can cause important components such as hot cylinder liners and cylinder heads to explode or deform due to sudden cooling. It should be added when the water temperature drops to 60-70 ℃.

2. Avoid stepping on the accelerator to start: Do not add fuel to the valve when starting. The correct method should be to place the throttle in the idle position to avoid excessive engine speed after starting the diesel engine, which can exacerbate wear and tear.

3. It is strictly prohibited to forcibly start the trailer in a cold state: Forcefully starting the trailer in a cold state or when the oil viscosity is high will exacerbate the wear and tear between the moving parts of the diesel engine, which is not conducive to extending the service life of the diesel engine.

4. Prohibit ignition and starting at the intake pipe: Igniting and starting at the intake pipe can cause the ash and hard debris generated by material combustion to be sucked into the cylinder, which can easily cause the intake and exhaust valves to not close tightly and strain the cylinder.

5. Do not use electric plugs or flame preheaters for a long time: The heating element of electric plugs or flame preheaters consumes a lot of electricity and generates a lot of heat. Long term use can damage the battery or even burn out the heating wire due to rapid discharge. The continuous use time of the glow plug should not exceed 1 minute.

6. Avoid directly adding engine oil to the cylinder: Although it can facilitate cold engine starting, the engine oil cannot be completely burned, which can easily produce carbon deposits, weaken the elasticity of the piston ring, reduce the sealing performance of the cylinder, and accelerate the wear of the cylinder liner.

7. Do not directly pour gasoline into the intake pipe: gasoline has a lower ignition point than diesel and burns before diesel. This can cause the engine to work rough and produce strong knocking, and in severe cases, diesel engine reversal can also occur.

Following the correct start-up operation specifications is a prerequisite for ensuring the stable operation of diesel generator sets, extending equipment life, and ensuring personnel safety. Users should strictly follow the operating procedures for their work and regularly maintain the equipment.
